CONTRAINDICATIONS
Topical Retinoids
Topical retinoids should be avoided during pregnancy and nursing, due primarily to medicolegal issues raised by the teratogenicity of
oralย retinoids. Use of irritating topical products (e.g. abrasive cleansers, astringents) and hair removal via waxing should be avoided in areas being treated with a topical retinoid.
Systemic Retinoids
The absolute contraindications are pregnancy, women contemplating becoming pregnant or non-compliant with contraception, breastfeeding, and hypersensitivity to medication components. Relative contraindications include moderate to severe hypercholesterolemia or hypertriglyceridemia, significant hepatic dysfunction (especially for bexarotene), hypothyroidism (especially for bexarotene and alitretinoin), suicidal ideation, and pseudotumor cerebri. Patients should be advised not to take vitamin A supplements in excess.
