IONTOPHORESIS

In some patients, tap or deionized water iontophoresis can be used successfully to treat localized hyperhidrosis of the palms, soles, or axillae. In this technique, direct electrical current is passed through the treatment site while the patient is in contact with an aqueous ionic solution. The electric current introduces ions from the solution into the patientโ€™s skin and appears to inhibit sweating by occluding the eccrine ducts at the level of the stratum corneum.

A battery-powered unit for home use (Drionicยฎ) is available. It is more effective for treatment of palmoplantar hyperhidrosis than for axillary hyperhidrosis. Cessation of sweating usually requires treatment of each palm or sole with 20โ€‰mA of current for 30 minutes daily. The recent use of botulinum toxin type A injections for hyperhidrosis has provided many hyperhidrosis sufferers with a more efficient and longer-lasting treatment modality, albeit at greater expense.
