FUTURE TRENDS
The history of MMS is one of continuous innovation and improvement. Potential enhancements include perioperative tumor definition via noninvasive imaging (e.g. reflectance confocal microscopy, optical coherence tomography) in order to visualize subclinical tumor involvement, use of rapid immunostains that enhance diagnostic sensitivity and specificity, new indications for MMS based upon evidence-based medicine, and further refinements of practice guidelines centered on patient-related outcomes. With the increase in the incidence of skin cancer, the demand for MMS will continue to rise. Given the risk of overuse of MMS, it is important to be mindful of its appropriate use, other viable treatment options, and shared decision-making with patients. Current ongoing, large, multicenter database studies aim to further establish MMS as the treatment of choice for high-risk
cutaneous neoplasms due to high cure rates, tissue sparing potential, safety, low complication rate, convenience of an outpatient procedure, and cost effectiveness.
