FUTURE DIRECTIONS
Improved understanding of the physiology of the stratum corneum is leading to new dermatologic developments within the realm of cosmetics and skin care products. This has spurred the growth in cosmeceuticals that promise to improve cutaneous function and enhance appearance. In addition, technology that was originally developed for skin keratin can be directly transferred to hair and nail keratin. Future research will undoubtedly explore methods of preventing cutaneous inflammation, which represents a common thread between dermatologic disease and potential adverse effects of cosmetics.
