Introduction

Key features
A mainstay of correcting androgenic alopecia is transplantation of follicles harvested from the non-alopecic posterior scalp as 1–4 hair follicular units
Follicular unit grafts can be obtained either manually or
mechanically and are placed into small “recipient” sites (0.5–1 mm in diameter) produced by a blade or needle
There are two major surgical methods: (1) elliptical donor harvesting (follicular unit transplantation [FUT]); and (2) follicular unit excision (FUE)
Patient expectations and continued progression of androgenic alopecia, as well as donor site hair density, quantity and quality, are key considerations
Although men and women have different patterns of androgenic alopecia, properly selected patients can undergo successful hair transplantation
