INTRODUCTION

Lichen sclerosus (LS) is a clinically distinct inflammatory disease, primarily of the superficial dermis or submucosa, that leads to ivorywhite scar-like atrophy. Extragenital LS may itch and be cosmetically disturbing whereas genital LS causes both dryness and severe, persistent pruritus, and it often leads to progressive atrophy and functional impairment. Phimosis or scarring of the vaginal introitus are the most frequent complications. If left untreated, ~4% of patients with vulvar LS may develop differentiated vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).
