INTRODUCTION
Dermatologists are confronted daily with the effects of UV light on the skin and often deal with them in a seemingly contradictory way. On the one hand, they have the responsibility of warning their patients against the deleterious effects of sunlight, such as sunburn, photoaging, and sun-induced skin cancers, and on the other hand, they use UV irradiation to treat skin disease. As with all medical interventions, dermatologists are weighing the risks versus the benefits when they use UV light for therapeutic purposes.
