EPIDEMIOLOGY
In 2020, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime estimated that globally 36 million people suffered from drug use disorders, but only a minority had received necessary treatment. According to theย 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), 20.4 million Americans age 12 years or older experienced a substance use disorder during that year (Fig. 89.1). The statistics were as follows: 71% had an alcohol use disorder, 41% had an illicit drug use disorder, and 12% had both. Drug abuse and addiction has cost American society more than $740 billion annually in lost workplace productivity, healthcare expenses, and crime-related costs.
