局部麻醉劑（local anesthetics）依其中間鏈（intermediate chain）的連結方式分為兩大類——amides 與 esters。
「麻醉劑過敏」（“Anesthetic allergies”）的表現各異，從續發於 epinephrine 的心悸與血管迷走神經反應（vasovagal reactions），到因防腐劑或局部麻醉劑（尤其是 esters）所引起的蕁麻疹（urticaria）與過敏性休克（anaphylaxis）。
局部麻醉劑的添加物包括 epinephrine、sodium
bicarbonate 與 hyaluronidase。
神經阻斷（nerve blocks）在對顏面、指（趾）以及掌蹠表面施行處置時特別有幫助。
