傷口敷料已從單純的傷口覆蓋物，演進為更具主動性的傷口處理工具，能直接與傷口環境交互作用
沒有一種敷料能完美適用於所有傷口，但若使用得當，敷料可改善癒合時間與美觀，並可減少疼痛與感染
半透性（semipermeable）或封閉性（occlusive）敷料可提供潮濕環境、留住含有促進癒合之生長因子的傷口滲液，並促成低組織氧分壓，進而刺激血管新生（angiogenesis）與膠原蛋白沉積
