Key features
ยThere are several variants of cutaneous lupus, defined in part by the location and depth of the inflammatory infiltrate
ยAcute cutaneous lupus involves primarily the epidermis and upper dermis and is usually associated with active systemic disease
ยSubacute cutaneous lupus involves primarily the epidermis and upper dermis and most patients demonstrate or report photoยญ sensitivity and have anti-SSA/Ro autoantibodies sometime during the course of their disease; the majority do not have serious systemic involvement (renal, CNS, or cardiopulmonary)
ยDiscoid lesions of lupus involve the epidermis, upper and lower dermis, and adnexal structures, and they can develop atrophy and/ or scarring; the majority of patients do not have clinically significant systemic disease
ยLupus erythematosus tumidus involves the dermis and adnexal structures, with sparing of the epidermis, and has a prominent infilยญ tration of mucin; lesions are often photo-inducible
ยLupus panniculitis involves the subcutaneous tissue and may result in disfiguring depressed areas due to lipoatrophy
