DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS

Nutritional dermatoses rarely result from the deficiency of a single nutrient, element, or vitamin as multiple deficiencies often coexist. A high index of suspicion is required in that clinical manifestations are often nonspecific and, in mild to moderate deficiencies, somewhat subtle. A few specific deficiencies do have characteristic mucocutaneous and systemic features that can be accurately recognized by the experienced clinician. Suspected deficiencies can usually be confirmed via laboratory analysis (see Table 51.2), and they readily respond to the administration of the deficient nutrient, element, and/or vitamin.
